In Rev. 13:10 we are told "This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of God's people." Everyone has a "this" that calls for that. What is your "this" and how will you face it?

Reflect & Remind

Dear church,

I'm looking forward to starting 2012 with you, worshiping together!

On Sunday, January 1st, I'll be starting a short series called "Reflect & Remind." This will be a personal and powerful reflection on the faith and life lessons of the last year, and we'll be reminded of the core values that form the basis of our walk of faith and the trajectory of our church. You do not want to miss it. 2012 begins at Cornerstone, 10 a.m. at Red River Theatres.

We have a lot to be thankful for as we end 2011. December was the highest attended month ever at Cornerstone, with an average of over 90 people at each service. Plus, more people experienced Cornerstone for the first time ever in December than any other previous month! The later Christmas Eve service time, which was prompted by having to work around the Theatre's Saturday schedule, turned into a blessing. A few who wouldn't have made it to an earlier service joined in, and it became our highest-attended Christmas Eve service ever. Growth came not only with newcomers: we now have a record number of Participating Members, who have demonstrated a high commitment to Christ, and a high commitment to his body at Cornerstone.

These numbers--90+ at each service, 44 first-time guests, 25 Participating Members--matter, because each one represents a life, an eternal soul. Each one is connected to a family, and is part of a community at work, at play and in a neighborhood. People matter to God, so they matter to us. When the Gospel impacts a life, the course of life changes, the family is blessed, and the future is brighter both now and forever.

I'm so glad you can be counted among the family at Cornerstone. As we wrap up 2011, I am reminded of the many contributions so many have made at Cornerstone out of love for Jesus Christ and a commitment to his Kingdom. I pray that you will be blessed exponentially in the coming year.

There are just two days until our big Christmas celebration on Sunday, December 18! The kids Christmas pageant will be a meaningful service for all ages, and is usually the best attended service of the year!

On Sunday at Cornerstone you heard the story of Joe Torrillo, a New York City firefighter, who ran toward the danger on 9/11 and was buried alive twice by the collapse of the Twin Towers. You can read Joe's story here:

This week as we consider Jesus' first Advent ("Coming"), what Joe did reminds us of what Jesus did: he came to us in our peril, fully aware of the coming collapse, in order to rescue us. The mission was dangerous and personally costly.

Are you running away from the danger or running towards it?

Like Jesus, Christ's followers are on a rescue mission, telling people how to escape the Kingdom of Corruption (the world, the flesh, and the devil) and how to move into the Kingdom of God.

Jesus came to us (God With Us) to take us someplace. He left us here to bring others along.

At Christmas time, we have a strategic opportunity to introduce our family and friends to the Ultimate Rescue Hero by inviting them to church. Each day we have the responsibility to run towards the danger and bring others along with us. Who can you invite today?

Here are some ideas:

Reminders

Invite someone to the potluck! In one week, on Sunday, December 11, we'll have a church-wide Christmas celebration potluck right after church. Much like the Ladies' Christmas Party, there are many who will miss out if you don't invite them to come along! These everyone's-included fellowships have been relaxing, enjoyable times to make friends and enjoy each others' company. Ask people if they're going. If they are, tell them you'll see them there. If not, invite them to come and join you!
Kids go directly to the Kids' Zone this Sunday and next (12/4 and 12/11). When your family arrives, kids in the Kids' Zone (Little & Big) go directly to the Stonyfield theater for their Christmas pageant rehearsal. Nursery children (ages 0-2) will stay with their family until the greeting time as usual. The kids' Christmas pageant, "Hold on to Your Hats! It's Christmas!" will be the regularly scheduled service 10 a.m. on Sunday, December 18. Families and friends are welcome and expected!

Women, find another woman this Sunday and ask her if she's going to the Ladies' Christmas Party. If so, tell her you'll see her there. If not, ask why not and invite her to come and hang out with you. Some people won't go unless they're personally invited and know they'll know at least one other person there. Be that person for someone!

Dear church,

Although last Sunday's message talked about our wallet, the emphasis was on the heart. This is reflected in the Big Idea for the week, directly from Scripture, that ultimately, tithing is a trust issue. Our outward actions, including what we decide about money, tithing and giving, are simply indicators of what's going on inside. Do I trust the Lord? Do I believe he truly has my best interests at heart?

This is why Jesus said to clean the inside of the cup first. If we get our heart right, our hands will follow.

A while ago, I asked a trusted woman in our church what she would say to those who are struggling with the issue of giving. Here's what she wrote:

When we love the Lord, we want to please Him, for starters, and He has commanded us to bring the tithe into the storehouse. We are promised blessings that will be too innumerable to count and I have experienced that I cannot out give God. Also, we are really cheating ourselves out of the blessings when we do not give generously. All our income is due to God's provision and it is important for us to recognize that. Then, giving back to Him takes on a different perspective. I believe that Jesus taught, by the example of the poor widow who gave her all, that we need to be giving the tenth as a baseline. It is amazing how much easier it is to live on 90% with God in control than to try and manage 100% on our own.

When I retired from public education in 1997, I found that my income was not sufficient to include food in my monthly budget, so I started giving more to the Lord and it wasn't long before I got a call from Crotched Mountain asking me to come and interview for a job. I had not made any contact with them before.

I have tithed all my life, but for a long time did it on the net income that I received. My former pastor asked one Sunday in a sermon, "Would you rather be blessed on the net or on the gross?" At that point, I started to tithe on my gross income. I am blessed now to be able to give well beyond the minimum, and it is a joy to be able to do that. -- Ann Lindsay Getts

If you're struggling with the issue of giving, I would encourage you to first address your heart. Admit to the Lord you're struggling with faith and obedience here. Ask him to "clean the inside" first. Then take a step of obedience and faith (as Ann Lindsay did). On Sunday, I suggested three steps to consider:

Pick up a giving envelope. In fact, pick up a month's supply and decide to give something every week for a month. Make the first check you write, the "God" check.
Sign up for eGive. eGive is the automated, online giving option that helps you fulfill your good intentions. eGive can be used for one-time or changable gifts, or regular giving on your schedule.
Get Financial Peace University. The training you need to be a good manager (steward) of 100% of your resources is available to you right now! Get one of the two FPU kits I have right now and begin listening to the sessions on CD. I guarantee you'll save back the $99 several times over between now and when the next FPU course begins in the first week of February 2012. If you disagree, you can have your money back in time for Valentine's Day.

The blessings of obedience are awaiting you. The invitation from the Lord through the Scriptures rings down through the ages: "Put me to the test in this!"

Dear church,

Suellen and I just got back from two days away at a conference in Auburn, Maine. We are blessed and refreshed! I had the honor of participating in a panel discussion on church planting. It was so cool to be in a room packed out with people who are considering or following the call to be used by God to establish new outposts of the Kingdom of God in their community. (Thanks to those who knew about the conference and were praying for me.) We also got to spend some time with some dear friends in Maine on the way home, which was a great blessing too.

The main reason I wanted to write you now, however, is to encourage you, DON'T MISS CHURCH TOMORROW! As I wrapped up my preparations this evening, I became more and more excited about the message I have to share with you tomorrow. We're continuing with the Foundations series with "What Christians Believe" about money and finances. The message is called HOW TO CURE MONEY PROBLEMS AT THE CORE. I really believe people are going to be set free tomorrow. We'll be looking at an amazing passage and uncovering astounding promises from God's Word that deal with the heart of the matter. (Plus there will be the usual excellent music, hot coffee, sweet treats, warm fellowship, and we're celebrating communion.) Don't miss it!

I consider it a high honor to be your pastor. Thanks for the privilege of allowing me to speak God's Word into your life.

Here's our long-standing weather policy as a reminder for old hats and info for newbies at Cornerstone:

We don't cancel unless we absolutely have to do so. So if people can make it in and there's power at the Theatre, church is on.
If we ever did have to cancel (which we haven't due to weather since we've been meeting at the Theatre), we would announce it by 7 a.m. on our website, or you can always call the church number at 603-225-2550 or Pastor Brian's mobile (603-491-8585) to find out for sure.
We don't use radio or TV to announce cancellations.
We always encourage you to use your best judgment, which includes not being freaked out by the media and not being unwise either.

At the Theatre there'll be covered parking, covered walkways, hot coffee and a great service. Tomorrow's message is "The Essence of Salvation: How can I know where I stand with God?"

CornerstoneNH | That was a "Wow!" Sunday!

Dear church,

What can you say about a Sunday like ours this past Sunday but "Wow!" That was so amazing to see so many of you responding as you did in humility to God's Holy Spirit!

THE BIG IDEA for this week: If you don't plug in, you'll burn out.

For those that weren't there (where else could you possibly have been?!?), we examined the Scriptures which cleared up the confusion about the Holy Spirit, and talked from the Scriptures about the Holy Spirit's role in our salvation by sealing us, our life by filling us, and our sanctification (becoming more like Jesus) by convicting us of our sins.

But we didn't just talk about the Spirit, we experienced him! At the end of the message, I asked everyone who wanted to receive the Spirit in salvation, or to surrender to the Spirit's filling to receive power for life, or to repent of grieving the Holy Spirit with our habitual sins, to humble themselves and come to the front. This was a concrete way of demonstrating our need for the Holy Spirit in our lives. And as God's Word says (repeatedly), "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble."

I was awed by your response! At least 2/3 of the congregation came to the front as one; no hesitation, just obedience in response to the Holy Spirit. This was an amazing, holy time.

P.S. I had already been Wow!-ed before Sunday even came: I told the congregation on the previous Sunday that we had some ground to make up financially. That Sunday we had more individual gifts than we had had in many months. Then, through eGive, before church even started on this Sunday we had received our largest offering since Mother's Day! The Holy Spirit is the indispensable power source for living the Christian life. Don't try harder to live the Christian life (you'll burn out); surrender to the Holy Spirit's power.

There was only one person who was ever able to live the Christian life, that was Jesus Christ. Let him live the Christian life through you in the person of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit baptizes us (includes us) into God's family at salvation, so RECEIVE HIM // John 20:22 NIV—“Receive the Holy Spirit.”
The Holy Spirit empowers us to live as Christ would live in our shoes, so BE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT // Ephesians 5:18 NLT—Don't be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, let the Holy Spirit fill and control you.
The Holy Spirit convicts us of our sin, so DON'T QUENCH THE SPIRIT'S FIRE // 1 Thessalonians 5:19 NIV—Do not quench the Spirit.

I'm in Atlanta, packed and ready to return to New England today, after two days at Catalyst. (As far as I knew, I wasn't going when I woke up on Tuesday morning. I got a call. Someone blessed me. I was in Atlanta Wednesday night.) It's been a very good couple of days, and you'll hear a little about it tomorrow, Sunday, October 9, @CornerstoneNH. Here's what I want you to know before tomorrow:

In the summer of 1949, my team and I were preparing for the most intensive evangelistic mission we had ever attempted, a citywide outreach in Los Angeles, California. Although the press had ignored it, several hundred churches had come together to prepare and pray for the planned three-week-long event. We believed God had led us there, and many were praying He would use the meetings to bring many to Christ.
Just weeks before the mission was to start, however, I experienced a major crisis of faith—the most intense of my life. Some months before, a fellow evangelist whom I respected greatly had begun to express doubts about the Bible, urging me to “face facts” and change my belief that the Bible was the inspired Word of God. “Billy,” he said, “you’re fifty years out-of-date. People no longer accept the Bible as being inspired the way you do. Your faith is too simple.” I knew from my own reading that some modern theologians shared his views.
For months doubts about the Bible swirled through my mind, finally coming to a boil during a conference at which I was speaking in the mountains east of Los Angeles. One night, alone in my cabin at the conference, I studied carefully what the Bible said about its divine origin. I recalled that the prophets clearly believed they were speaking God’s Word; they used the phrase “Thus says the Lord” (or similar words) hundreds of times. I also knew that archaeological discoveries had repeatedly confirmed the Bible’s historical accuracy.
Especially significant to me, however, was Jesus’ own view of Scripture. He not only quoted it frequently, but also accepted it as the Word of God. While praying for His disciples, He said, “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth” (John 17:17). He also told them, “I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law” (Matthew 5:18). Shouldn’t I have the same view of Scripture as my Lord?
Finally I went for a walk in the moonlit forest. I knelt down with my Bible on a tree stump in front of me and began praying. I don’t recall my exact words, but my prayer went something like this: “O Lord, there are many things in this book I don’t understand. There are many problems in it for which I have no solution. ... But, Father, by faith I am going to accept this as Thy Word. From this moment on I am going to trust the Bible as the Word of God.”
When I got up from my knees, I sensed God’s presence in a way that I hadn’t felt for months. Not all my questions were answered, but I knew a major spiritual battle had been fought—and won. I never doubted the Bible’s divine inspiration again, and immediately my preaching took on a new confidence. This was, I believe, one reason why our Los Angeles meetings had to be extended from three weeks to eight.
Don’t let anyone shake your confidence in the Bible as God’s Word. If you have questions about it, don’t use them as an excuse to turn your back on God. Instead, face your doubts and seek answers; you aren’t the first person to ask them. (Your local Christian bookstore can help you.) In addition, read the Bible for yourself with an open heart and mind. Ask God to show you if it truly is His Word—and He will.
Your life will never be the same once you trust the Bible as God’s Word. God will begin to use it to change your life.

This Sunday, September 11, is the starting Sunday for the fall ministry season at Cornerstone. Yes, we know it's really still late summer, but the kids are back in school, vacations are over for a while, the leaves are beginnning to turn, and we're all adjusting back into our fall routine.

On this Sunday, and coming soon at Cornerstone:

"Foundations" begins - The new series that answers the question, "What do Christians believe?" will start this Sunday. Beliefs matter because what you believe determines what you do! The truth will set you free, but falsehoods imprison you. Get set free!
Remembering 9/11 - While not the entire focus, during church tomorrow we will mark the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks. Those attacks originally prompted many people to return to church and seek answers, hope and healing. Ten years on, the church is still the place to go to make sense of the world and get perspective on life.
Everyone's Invited Potluck - Directly after church tomorrow, everyone's invited to a potluck at the Varleys' house (29 Columbus Av, Concord). Bring a dish, a guest and a chair. It will be casual and fun. (And don't worry, you won't miss the Patriots; they play on Monday night this week.)
Youth begin "The Best Question Ever" - Our new combined youth group begins their series on "The Best Question Ever" this Thursday, September 15 (7-9p at the Foremans'). They meet on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month of the fall semester.
CONNECTIONPoint 101 on the following Sunday - The start of Foundations, the 9/11 anniversary, and a potluck party are all great reasons to invite someone to church. Dear church,

Did you know Hurricane Andrew blew the Foremans all the way to New Hampshire? Well, sort of.

Nineteen years and one day ago, Category 5 Hurricane Andrew leveled a swath of South Florida. In preparation for the aftermath, seven-months-pregnant Suellen and I spent the night in the Palm Beach County American Red Cross Chapter House, where I was the IT guy. The youth minister of a church in Andrew's path had his home destroyed and, in the days afterward took shelter with friends a little farther north in Boynton Beach. In time, he ended up staying in Palm Beach County, and planted South Palm Community Church, where I became its first associate pastor, my first ministry position! From there we took the leap of faith all the way up to New Hampshire in 1999, and the rest, as they say, is history!

This weekend we may be visited by a little lady named Irene. We'll approach this much like we do the winter storms we're much more familiar with in these parts:

The Big Idea for this week is Come back from the edge!

Sunday's message was all about margin. Margin is the amount available beyond what is actually needed. It's the extra, the reserve, the white space on a page, the median on a road.

You need margin in life. You crave it. You benefit from it. Without it ...

Stress levels increase.
Focus narrows (we become self-centered).
Relationships suffer (because relationships happen in the margin of life).

In order to get the most out of life, you might have to do less. So your Heavenly Father invites you to come back from the edge! You may be ...

Afraid you'll miss out.
Fearful you'll fall behind.
Worrying you won't matter.

But reducing your margin is not a strategy for success, it's a recipe for disaster.

You do have limits. You'll either choose to live within those limits or the limits will eventually force themselves upon you. Why not choose to live within limits relationally, financially, in your schedule, in your work. When you've got margin, you can thrive!

Transformational -- Part 6 | What I Learned at the Summit - Hear it here...

"Thus says the LORD, ‘Make this valley full of trenches.’" -- 2 Kings 3:16 NASB

The kings of Israel, Judah and Edom had come together to go to war. But after their armies had traveled along a roundabout route through the wilderness for seven days, there was no water for the men or their animals. So they sought out Elisha, the prophet of the Lord. "What should we do?" Elisha's word from the Lord? Get digging! I'm sending water, and I'll give you success against your enemies. Read the whole thing in 2 Kings 3:9-20.

Notice this:

The roundabout way -- Sometimes our plans are delayed or destroyed. The waiting and extra travel took its toll and created an additional problem: not enough water.
No time for you -- Elisha almost completely rebuffed the kings, because one was a notorious idol worshiper. If you put something ahead of the Lord, do you expect him to move you to the head of the line?
Call for the harp -- God would speak to Elisha when the music played, so he called for a harp. Pray. Get in the Word. Show up at church. You've got to get yourself into the place where the Lord can speak to you.
Dig some ditches! -- They wanted water. God said he would send it. They had to prepare for it. If you've heard from the Lord, get busy preparing for what he's promised.
The next day -- The water didn't come until the next day. God may be giving you time to prepare for his blessings. Don't wait to act, or doubt between the promise and its fulfillment. Life has a way of beating the audacity out of you. Don't let it.

Pick up your shovel and get busy!

An all or nothing proposition | The Big Idea

The Big Idea for this week is that following Jesus is an all or nothing proposition.

A half-hearted disciple is unrecognized in Jesus teaching:

Jesus replied, “…you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.” -- Mark 12:29-30 NLT
“And if you do not carry your own cross and follow me, you cannot be my disciple.” -- Luke 14:27 NLT
“I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other! But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth!” -- Revelation 3:15-16 NLT

In the passage we looked at on Sunday, Jesus gave three vivid pictures of the no-holds-barred, all-or-nothing, all-in kind of discipleship he was proposing:

Shoulder your cross -- Jesus told the crowds that following him meant carrying a cross--a vivid picture of death. The people would have been used to seeing the condemned carrying their crosses to the place of execution.
Count the cost -- You don't start building a building unless you've got the money to finish it, or else you'll become a laughingstock.
Take stock of your strength -- You don't go to war with 10,000 troops against an enemy with 20,000 unless you know you can win.

The good news? Saying "Yes!" to Jesus gives you an ace in the hole: the strength and staying power of the Holy Spirit. You don't have to be under the controlling influence of your flesh (See 1 Corinthians 2:3-4), instead you can be filled with the Spirit (Ephesians 5:20), with confidence in this:

And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns. -- Philippians 1:6 NLT
For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him. -- Philippians 2:13 NLT
Dear friends, we are already God’s children, but he has not yet shown us what we will be like when Christ appears. But we do know that we will be like him, for we will see him as he really is.-- 1 John 3:2 NLT

Because this is the kind of discipleship Jesus requires and empowers, here is the application for every situation and question of life:

Ask “What would a wholehearted follower of Jesus Christ do?”
and do that!

Several from the Cornerstone family are serving in various missions and ministries this summer.* This weekend we found out that two more of our teens, brother and sister Esther & Isaiah Mason, have the opportunity to go to WorkCamp, a ministry of middle and high school students fixing up homes for the under-resourced right here in New England

God never gets tired or weary.
Part of being human is that we get tired. We need sleep. Not only do we run out of physical stamina, we get weary mentally, emotionally and spiritually of the day-to-day grind and problems of life. As Christians, what keeps us going? What gives rest to our weary souls? God, who never grows tired or weary, who has boundless energy to sustain the entire universe, and who never gets tired of working for the glory of His Name and the good of His people!

"No Greater Love" Women's Event | Pam Logsdon

Greetings:

By now we are hopeful many, if not all of you, have heard about the upcoming Women's Conference scheduled for Saturday, June 4. As we’ve shared with others, this is a collaborative effort between many women in our community and GOD! :) We are excited for what He will do on that day as He uses us to serve you in love and with joy. Many women are working behind the scenes to prepare a time and place for YOU to be blessed, strengthened, encouraged and lifted up! You deserve this great time of blessing and He has a plan for every woman who will be there on that day!

For those who may be hesitant and wonder what this is all about, we’d like to share with you a brief glimpse of what our morning will look like. Some of you may be hesitant to say yes because you're uncertain. So let us help to ease your curiosity!

We'll begin with a time of worship, lead by the talented Sarah Mason, from Oasis Christian Church. She has gathered together a group of musicians from area churches (including three of our own . . . Kent Rich, Chris Logsdon, and Andrew Mason) and will certainly bless you with the Spirit of worship! ("I will sing a new song to you O God" Psalm 144:9)

After worship, prepare yourself for a time of laughter as a lady by the name of Monica Charpentier will wow us with her acting talent! She has a wonderful skit prepared and will most definitely put a smile on your face and bring joy to the gathering! The love of God exudes from her in all that she does! If anything, come and be a part of her energy and enthusiasm as she blesses God through her gift of acting! This month I’ve been talking about membership because at Cornerstone membership is primarily a spiritual growth tool, and I want you to grow in your faith and discipleship.

At Cornerstone we’ve defined membership by participation: if you are actively participating in the life of the church, we affirm you as a member.

We choose five key components of Christian discipleship and made them the basis of participating membership. These components are:

Worship
Fellowship
Ministry
Stewardship
Evangelism

Believer developing their Christian walk and deepening their Christian faith are going to be participating in these areas of discipleship.

Then we took these five key components and matched them to five “Next Step” practices that we hope each person at Cornerstone will take as they progress.

Weekend Worship
Connection Groups
Serving
Giving a Tithe
Praying for Five

If you are doing these things, experience has show us that you will grow.

And we want you to keep growing, so each year in order to continue as a Participating Member at Cornerstone, we wipe the slate clean and ask all current members to renew their membership by recommitting to these core practices. This year, we’re doing that in this month, February.

So here’s what I’m asking you to do:

If you have not been a member but are committed to doing those five things, take a minute and submit your Participating Membership Application & Covenant here. Each section of this online application has descriptions and links that walk you easily through the application.

Announcing our new Kids' Choir!

Meditation | Do You Have Joy?

Do you have Joy?

No, I haven't lost track of my daughter, Joy Marie. This question I was pondering as I considered my circumstances (in pain since I'm dealing with a foot injury) and thought about what I observe in others going through various challenges.

Here's the lie: if my circumstances are right, I experience joy; if things go poorly, I can't have joy.

I will certainly be happy when my foot heals. But the truth is I can have joy right now. And you can too, regardless of your circumstances. How's that?

The Bible says that joy (along with love, peace, and a slew of other good things) is the fruit of the Spirit, not a result of circumstances.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

God is the source of joy. We can rejoice in him, even if our circumstances are nothing to celebrate. In fact the Bible says we can rejoice in the midst of our trials.

Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.

Cut wood this Saturday 1-4 p.m. in Concord We know of a man who had a neck injury that has put him out of work for five weeks. His wife has taken the initiative to organize some men to cut, split and stack wood for heating their home this winter. We hope to knock it this Saturday, September 18. WorkCamp 2011 Announced

WorkCampNE (New England) is a week-long local mission trip for youth in middle and high school. Students stay in a school and go out into the selected community to fix up the homes of people in need. Our own Andrew Mason and Chris Logsdon were band members for the 2010 weeks in Kennebunkport, ME and previous years. The 2011 high school WorkCampNE weeks will be July 10-16 and 17-23 in Lebanon, NH. The middle school week is July 24-30 in Hopkinton, NH. The cost is $325 per person.
